It may begin with a headache or burning eyes after doing close work, but sometimes symptoms of farsightedness are so slight they are undetectable. As the condition progresses, however, some symptoms that become more obvious can be eyestrain, difficulty focusing on near objects, aching eyes, and irritability after concentrating on something for any length of time. These are common symptoms of farsightedness and when any or all of these are experienced you should make an appointment with our Wade Hampton optometrist at Yeager Vision Care. At our state-of-the-art facility, your entire family can get comprehensive eye exams that will not only detect farsightedness, but any other condition that may affect the healthy vision of you or your children. Routine vision screenings are often done in schools but are not very effective in detecting farsightedness.
Farsightedness (hyperopia) means that you can see better far away than you can close up, so closer objects will be blurry. Your ability to focus properly is determined by the degree of your farsightedness and is usually present at birth, and can also run in families. Most babies and young children are slightly farsighted as their eyes grow and lengthen but the condition usually corrects itself by the time they are 7 or 8 years old. Our Wade Hampton optometrist explains that farsightedness is caused by the eye being smaller than average, or the cornea having too little of a curve. With these conditions present the light that is focused in your eye, lands behind your retina rather than on your retina.
In mild cases of farsightedness, your eyes may be able to balance without corrective lenses, but typically our Wade Hampton optometrist will prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct the problem. Much like nearsightedness, glasses, contact lenses or even refractive surgery in certain cases, would be recommended as treatment to move the image from behind your retina to on your retina itself. Although farsightedness is a common condition, at Yeager Vision Care, healthy eyesight is always our focus, and whatever the condition, we do our well-educated best to maintain your clear vision.
